Butch/junior stocker. the saginaws tend to have lower first gear ratios making great driveability trans. a friend has a 60 over 454 in his 68 elky and has been driven hard for many years now. part of the lack of value is the weight of the iron case. the M17 Saginaw 3 speed in my 66 elky has a lower first gear than any 4 speed, Saginaw or Muncie.My 1968 chevelle came with a 327sbc/Saginaw 4-speed/12 bolt stock, but I am not sure which 327 it is or which ratios the Saginaw has. I actually pulled the stock motor/trans/rear when the motor started knocking after racing my cousin's 2004 silverado a few too many times. I just put in a t5 in my 72, swapped it out for a th350..a (BOP one!! but thats another story) I used a t5 out of a transam and used the bellhousing, hyd clutch and transmission. I had to have a shorter drive shaft made, if your is in good shape you may be able to just have it cut down.It's a 2.54 first gear 4-speed though. The 3.50 first gear trannys would probably come apart if the car hooked up hard, due to the torque multiplication of the super low first gear.
