In the meantime, look for a snap ring in the housing which would prevent the pto shaft bearing from coming out the rear end. With my tractor the shaft comes out with the rear cover plate. I have to learn how the Nortrac pto shaft comes out. I agree with the possibility the two halves of the shaft bottomed out when you crossed that ditch, thus jamming the coupler. The first thing I suggest is to knock the pins out hold the shaft to the coupler. That should give you a bit more room to work.
