Several factors play key roles into smallies moving from the lake to the St. Clair river. Bait, cover, current, & water temp. Many will say smallie migration main driving force is water temp.....well in a way it is but not exactly. First and fore most is bait fish. No bait = no smallies moving into the river. Lots of people fishing all around the launch, in the channel and up to 50 yds from shore.Usually start fishing about 8am til 11 or so then the bite seems to slow. Over 100 caught consistently with us taking home 25 to 35 each time. We only keep eight inches and up and we had some beautiful slab perch this year.
