We have some other members that maybe able to give you a more definitive answer."Prior to 1968 Marlin did not serialize their 22s with the exception of the 39 and then 39A models. However, from 1962 through 1968 they used a 2 digit letter code stamped on the barrel near the receiver, indicating month and year of manufacture. The Gun Control Act of 1968 mandated serial numbers for everything.My rifle pre-dates the HS prefix models and they were first made in 1932. The "S" prefix guns appeared in 1926 and HS appeared in 1932. I'd like to pin down which year in between my 39 was made. The "S" prefix Model 39 ( NO "A" )was from 1926-1932.
